Does Your Car Have Boogies? Ewww

I hate when a mechanic comes up to me during an oil change, shows me my engine air filter and says, “You should have this replaced.  It will cost you an extra $30.”  I always think they are just trying to up-sell me and make money.  The say something about engine performance or gas mileage and I usually tuned them out.  I’m not falling for it!Well, by not listening I fell for it because engine air filters are essential!  Without getting too detailed about how an engine works you need to know the engine needs air.  It pulls air in from outside as you drive.Do you know how dirty the outside air is we breathe?  Our nose hairs act as great filters!  I want you to look at your engine air filter as nose hairs.  The filter acts as a dust and dirt blocker to your engine.  As your nose hairs get clogged with dust and dirt, you get boogies and it’s hard to breath. If you don’t change your engine air filter at your owner’s manual recommended suggestion, your engine will get boogies and it will be hard for it to breath.  So yes, your engine performance will drop and you will use more gas while driving. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing the engine air filter every 15 to 30,000 miles.  I say every 1-2 years. If you would like to learn more about engine air filters, attend one of my monthly workshops or schedule a workshop with your group or organization! Contact me for details!
