If You Think Of Your Engine Like A Vagina...

Now that I have your attention, have you ever thought to yourself why do cars need motor oil?

While many mechanics compare an engine to a heart, your favorite mechanic in heels believes thinking of an engine like a vagina is a great way to teach people, especially women, the purpose of motor oil aka engine oil and why it is necessary to have oil running through your engine at all times!

I want you to picture the dashboard in your car. There is a meter on it that measure revolutions per minute (RPM). It is called a tachometer and it measures how fast the internal parts are rotating inside of your engine including pistons that move up and down inside engine cylinder walls. It normally goes from 1 rpm (idle) to 7 rpms (redlining).

However if you look closely on the meter, it says RPM X 1000. That means when you are idling your engine is spinning 1000 revolutions per minute (RPM). Going up a hill or on the highway you can get up to 3000 or 4000 RPM. That’s a lot of fast moving metal parts rubbing and sliding up and down together causing friction.

The main purpose of engine oil is to lubricate. Ladies, we know a little something about the importance of lubrication when it comes to friction and moving parts. 😉

Oil creates a slippery coating of lubrication so moving parts can move more fluidly. Without the oil's lubrication, the friction in the engine's fast moving parts produces so much heat, your engine will seize up, essentially killing it.

Have you ever noticed when you are due or overdue for an oil change, you car is running kinda rough?  That's because over time, as you are using your vehicle, the engine oil breaks down and burns off, turns a dark brown color, contains gritty dirt particles and/or may be low in quantity.  It is not at its optimum lubricating characteristics. Imagine how that must feel to your engine?  Your car's engine wants to run with smooth and full lubrication so it can perform at is best with ease. 😌

Oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion of metal parts, improves sealing, and cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving parts.

Now do you understand why engine oil is so important and why it must be changed regularly?  I explain to all Shecanics getting your oil changed when it is due is the most important task to perform on you vehicle. Prolonging oil changes or worse - not doing them regularly - could cost you thousands of dollars in engine damage. Today’s oil changes cost around $65-$100 dollars at most independent shops and modern cars can go 5,000 miles or 4-5 months between oil changes. Not a bad investment for your car.

My next blog will talk about how often to change your oil to keep your (ahem) engine running at its best!
